Returning to exercise after pregnancy

Returning to exercise after giving birth can be a daunting task for any new Mum. As a general guideline, 6 weeks rest after birth is recommended to allow for healing however this can vary depending on your health and birthing history. After this initial rest period, exercise can be incorporated and hosts a huge number of benefits including increased energy, improved sleep, stress reduction, and improved mental health. The current guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week. It is also recommended to start with low impact activity and incorporate both cardio and strengthening exercises. 

The aim of a Post-Natal Physiotherapy assessment is to reduce the risk of injury and ensure safe return to exercise. During your visit, we will assess muscular imbalances, lumbopelvic stability and also check for diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles). We will discuss and offer advice on management of incontinence, should you be affected, and ensure correct pelvic floor and core activation techniques.  An indivualised exercise programme will be given based on your goals and levels of activity that you want to achieve.
